SF Urban Riders growing every day…

6 11 2008

There’s a new deputy in town. SF Urban Riders is a group of mountain biking trail advocates interested in increasing awareness about access issues in the San Francisco area.  Using support from local and international organizations, SFUR is quickly building momentum as well as bike stunts.  With donations from Wheels of Justice, and a handful of volunteers – dozes of kids were able to ride bikes in a safe, controlled environment and develop their skills.

Does the election affect cyclists?

29 10 2008

Measure WW: An extension of bond measure AA for the EBRPD to maintain and enhance park facilities, including amenities for all trail users.

Who says No? “”It’s our one chance to bring any kind of leverage against the parks district.”

Who says Yes? “We make this endorsement despite serious concerns about EBRPD’s overriding philosophy toward bicycles in policy documents incl uding the District’s Master Plan and Ordinance 38.”

Now, these aren’t the only sources for information – nor the best.  It is merely my intent to drive home the fact that we have more cyclists voting this election, because more of them exist.  Its an effort to provide educational outlets for them, so they can make responsible decisions at the voting booth.

OIWC Recap

28 10 2008

The prominent message I learned when I attended the luncheon, was that Public Speaking was the biggest fear that people had, even over death.  Overcoming that fear, cleared the path for their success.

The panel included:

Panel moderator: Megan Tompkins, Editor of Bicycle Retailer and Industry News
Panelists: Elysa Walk, GM Giant Bicycle
Krista Rettig, Women’s Specific Design Brand Mgr, Trek Bicycle Corp.
Liza LeClaire, Chief Operating Officer, Wheel & Sprocket Retail Store
Jenn Dice, Government Affairs Director, IMBA

The following are the supplemental notes from their feedback:

Top 5 Leadership Skills for Business Success

  1. Care for your staff and use your nurturing instincts that are unique to being a woman.
  2. Learn public speaking skills and develop a comfort level speaking to a group.
  3. Find your unique leadership style and apply it—different styles can be equally effective.
  4. Don’t try to be what you’re not—if you’re not a “bike guy,” don’t try to be one.
  5. Don’t underestimate yourself—take risks, be assertive and speak up in meetings.”
